September 14, 1983: Amy Jade Winehouse's beginnings were humble. She is born in London to a pharmacy tech mother, Janis, and her father Mitch, who drove taxi cabs for a living.
Oct. 20, 2003: Winehouse releases her debut album, Frank, which she co-wrote. It goes on to receive critical acclaim in the U.K. and achieve platinum success. Critics note her soulful voice, and compare her to greats like Nina Simone and Billie Holiday.
2004: Winehouse wins the Ivor Novello songwriting award for Best Contemporary Song for her first single Stronger Than Me.
Oct. 30, 2006: Winehouse releases "Back to Black" in the UK. It enters at number seven on the Billboard 200 in the U.S.; "Back to Black" became the best selling album in the UK the following year, selling around 1.85 million copies.
May 2007: Winehouse marries former video production assistant Blake Fielder-Civil in a secret during a trip to Florida. It begins a a tumultous two-year relationship, which the singer later admits was riddled with drug use. (It was also that year that Time magazine names "Rehab" one of its top 10 songs).
Jan. 24, 2008: Winehouse checks in to rehab after Scotland Yard launches an investigation into released footage of the soul-crooning Brit snorting an unidentified substance, smoking a suspicious-looking pipe and admitting to taking six Valium. She was transferred from the rehab facility to a London hospital after reaching dangerous levels of dehydration due to withdrawal symptoms.
Feb. 10, 2008: Winehouse wins five Grammys, including nods for Best Pop Vocal Album for Back to Black, Best New Artist, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Rehab." Her album soon catapults to number two on the U.S. Billboard charts.
Feb. 12, 2008: Janis Winehouse says her daughter is on the road to recovery following her five-time Grammy win.
May 7, 2008: Winehouse is arrested in connection with the alleged possession of a controlled drug.
June 27, 2008: Winehouse delivers a soulful performance at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday party, and looks healthy doing so.
Jan. 16, 2009: Winehouse heads to St. Lucia for a two-month vacation, and resurfaces looking healthier than ever.
Mar. 6, 2009: Amy gets into trouble for allegedly punching a fan at a Society Ball in London. A few days later she is barred from entering the U.S. to perform at Coachella because of that assault arrest. She was similarly barred from the U.S. a year and a half earlier (around Grammy time that year) because of a drug rap. Winehouse later pled not guilty to the infamous fan-punching rap and and was acquitted of those charges.
Mar. 16, 2009: Winehouse heads back to the Caribbean to headline the 18th Annual St. Lucia Jazz Festival set to take place that May.
May 1, 2009: Winehouse is hospitalized for dehydration in St. Lucia after she faints in her Caribbean home.
June 17, 2009: Winehouse's parents, Janis and Mitch, make a public plea to try to get their daughter the help she needs, saying that she was still drinking while in a drug treatment program.
July 16, 2009: Winehouse and Blake Fielder-Civil finally call it quits after numerous fights and arrests, and are officially divorced.
Dec. 23, 2009: Winehouse charged with a public order offense and common assault after she reportedly pulls a theater manager's hair and spouts profanities at him during a family-friendly production of Cinderella.
Jan. 20, 2010: Winehouse pleads guilty to boozily assaulting a theater manager (aka common assault and disorder) in December. She is fined about $300 and given a two-year conditional discharge.
Mar. 11, 2010: Women's Wear Daily reports Winehouse has a new fashion line in the works with British fashion house Fred Perry. Amy is later featured in the November issue of Harper's Bazaar promoting the line.
June 7, 2010: It looks like things are turning around for Winehouse when she pops up looking healthier—and holding hands and kissing a new love, British film director Reg Traviss.
June 16, 2010: However, just a couple of weeks later, The Sun reports that Winehouse is once again back in rehab, following a heavy drinking session.
Oct. 18, 2010: Amy Winehouse is featured in the November issue of Harper's Bazaar, promoting her new clothing line with Fred Perry.
May 27, 2011: The Rehab crooner announces that she was heading back to rehab to get treatment for her addiction to alcohol.
June 2, 2011: Winehouse checks out of the Priory Clinic, just days after checking in. Her rep insists she didn't bail too early from the rehab facility, saying she had "finished her assessment" and was "raring to go" on her European Tour.
June 18, 2011: Winehouse gives a disastrous performance in Belgrade in which she turned up late, forgot lyrics, wandered around the stage aimlessly and garnered boos from the crowd.
June 21, 2011: The troubled Brit calls off the remainder of her 12-date European tour following the Belgrade concert. Winehouse's rep, Chris Goodman, says the singer is withdrawing from all scheduled performances while she focuses on recovering.
July 23, 2011: 27-year-old Winehouse is found dead in her London home. The cause of her death has not yet been revealed.
